Cape Town - The CEO of Sotheby's International Realty South Africa, Jason Rohde has arrived for his first court appearance in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The real estate executive was being kept at holding cells at the Stellenbosch police station after he was arrested at his Bryanston home in Johannesburg early on Tuesday morning in connection with the death of his 47-year-old wife Susan Rohde.

The two had been staying at the Spier Wine Estate for a company function recently. The mother of three was found hanging from the back of the bathroom door on July 24 with the cord of a hair-straightening iron around her neck.

Initially, police believed it was suicide, but it became a murder investigation after a post-mortem report concluded she had been strangled. Rohde was reportedly driven down to Cape Town from Johannesburg by police officials.

On Wednesday Rohde's lawyer Daniel Witz said they would most likely launch a bail application on Thursday.

The couple's three daughters, an 18-year-old and 16-year-old twins are being cared for by both their paternal and maternal grandparents, according to Witz.
