Johannesburg - A man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering two people and armed robbery by the Protea Magistrate's Court, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Njabulo Jali was convicted of killing a 23-year-old man in a tavern on August 31 last year, and murdering with three others a tavern owner in his home on September 9 last year, spokesman Sibusiso Chauke said.

Both murders took place in Meadowlands Zone 11, Soweto.

“The [tavern owner] was shot following a case of business robbery at his tavern at Meadowlands Zone in the early hours, at about 12.30am the same day he was killed,” said Chauke.

“He was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes, liquor and airtime.”

Jali also robbed a security guard of his firearm, using his own to do so, at a supermarket in Orlando West around 4.15pm on August 23 last year.

Chauke said Jali, following the tavern owner's murder, fled to KwaZulu-Natal where he was arrested on October 7 last year.

Jali was convicted and sentenced on Monday.

He was also found guilty of the illegal possession of a firearm and the illegal possession of ammunition.
