Cape Town – The head of the State Security Agency Sonto Kudjoe has quit after three years in the post, the state security ministry said on Friday.

“The contract of the Director General of the State Security Ambassador Sonto Kudjoe has been terminated by mutual agreement. Amb Kudjoe will pursue opportunities,” State Security Minister David Mahlobo said in a statement.

The ministry thanked Kudjoe for her contribution to the agency but declined to give further comment on her departure.

It said an acting appointment would be announced in due course.

Kudjoe was a career diplomat before she joined the SSA, serving as South Africa’s ambassador to Sweden and later Egypt.

The intelligence agency went through a major shake-up three years ago when Kudjoe’s predecessor, Jeff Maqetuka as well as the head of domestic intelligence Gibson Njenje and the head of foreign intelligence Moe Shaik, long seen as an ally of President Jacob Zuma, staged a joint walkout.

Speculation about the reason for their departure included that they had been pressed to stop a probe into the dealings of the Gupta family.
