Durban - The State on Wednesday withdrew assault charges against five Durban schoolgirls after they completed a National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) diversion programme.

A video recording of a bullying incident at Bechet Secondary School in June was posted on social media showing a group of schoolgirls, aged between 16 and 18, beating a school pupil who allegedly kissed the boyfriend of one of the girls. The incident took place in the girls’ toilet.

They were charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and were released into their parents’ custody.

The matter was referred to Nicro for mediation. The non-profit organisation specialises in social crime prevention and offender re-integration.

On Wednesday, the Durban Magistrate’s Court heard that the girls had completed a Youth Empowerment Scheme from August 11 to September 29.

Based on this, the Nicro social worker recommended that charges be withdrawn.
