A man was arrested in Polokwane on Friday after being caught loading cut railway steel at a scrap yard, police said.

Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the arrest followed the launch of a combined operation with Transnet to fight cable and steel theft on the railways.

The man was loading the steel into a container in the scrap yard.

Ngoepe said police believed the container was going to be shipped out of the country.

“We are busy investigating the exact place where the container was heading; the steel belongs to Transnet.”

Part of a truck was also found in the container. Police believed the truck was stolen and cut into pieces overnight.

Ngoepe said the vehicle identification unit had been roped in to identify the origin of the truck.

The man faced charges of possessing stolen goods, theft, and dealing in stolen goods. - Sapa
