Bloemfontein - With the festive season in full swing, stokvel members are urged to be alert as they withdraw their hard-earned savings money, police said on Tuesday.

Police in the Free State appealed to members of the public who are members of a cash savings club, stokvel or even a burial society to be on the look out for any suspicious activities as they prepare to “reap the benefits of their cash savings”.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Billy Jobs said people should heed safety tips to avoid falling “victim to cash robberies” and ensure their safety.

He said stokvel members should refrain from making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high risk days, especially the Monday after month end.

In addition, he said members should ensure that any person depositing club cash contributions or making withdrawals be accompanied by another club member and that it was best for members to pay cash “directly into the club’s account instead of collecting cash contributions and arranging for the club’s pay-out to be electronically transferred into each club member”.
