Johannesburg - Two students who were part of a group protesting against accommodation fees in Braamfontein sustained injuries to their heads after being hit by rubber bullets on Thursday night.

Chairman of the EFF’s Wits University student organisation Koketso Toho said that the organisation would seek legal advice as he claimed police fired rubber bullets against unarmed students.

He said the protesters only became “out of hand” after police action.

But JMPD spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar disputed this and said police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades only after the group of about 300 students became “unruly”.

Toho said the group of students were on their way to the Nelson Mandela Bridge where the CEO SleepOut charity drive was being held, planning to demand that the chief executive of the South Point residence - whom students claim is responsible for the high rents - address them.
