Durban - The University of the Free State vice-chancellor and rector, Professor Jonathan Jansen, has been issued with a summons for a R6 million claim from two former students.

According to civil rights action group Afriforum’s Henk Maree AfriForum Youth had instructed its legal team to continue with the subpoena on behalf of Cobus Muller and Charl Blom.

Muller and Blom are claiming compensation after they were accused of attempted murder last year, when they almost hit a black student with their vehicle on campus. During this time, they were allegedly publicly labelled as criminals.

Jansen will speak in the auditorium at Kloof’s St Agnes Anglican Church at noon on Wednesday.

His address “How to Overcome the Race to the Bottom in Education” is part of a fund-raising drive to keep alive the hopes of students on their way to achieving a BComm or other degree in Durban.

The Youth and Education Support Foundation saw their potential when they lived in circumstances far from hopeful.

* Tickets for Jansen’s talk on July 8 cost R100 and are available at Computicket.
