Durban - A total of 106 girls under the age of 12 were raped in a three-month period in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, The Witness newspaper reported on Thursday.

That was almost a third of the 325 rapes reported in the municipality from July to September.

The newspaper reported that these figures were released at an event known as the “sugar daddies campaign” held in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday to highlight the social ills of schoolgirls who were enticed by older men with money.

The newspaper quoted uMgungundlovu District Municipality health official Sthembile Dlamini as saying that the municipality also recorded 821 births to girls under the age of 18.

Umgungundlovu district encompasses Pietermaritzburg, Howick, Mpendle, and Richmond. - Sapa
