Johannesburg - Two alibi witnesses on Friday denied they were with Johannes Jacobus Steyn on the days the so-called “Sunday rapist” attacked his victims.
Judge Sita Kolbe ordered that the witnesses not be identified.
The first witness, a woman who worked with Steyn at the Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp during his community service, testified in the High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Alberton, that she never went to his home.
She was asked if she ever had sex with him at an abandoned holiday resort in Maropeng, where murdered teenager Louise de Waal's body was found, as Steyn had testified.
“Definitely not... Maybe in his dreams,” she answered.
Steyn had claimed he was with her on October 31, 2010 when an 11-year old girl was abducted in Krugersdorp and raped in Magaliesburg.
She denied she was with him or ever had sex with him.
When advocate Anton Lerm, for Steyn, asked if she simply denied the sexual relationship because she was ashamed, she said this was untrue.
Steyn, allegedly the “Sunday rapist”, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, 11 of rape, 10 of sexual assault, 10 of abduction, one of attempted sexual assault, and one of attempted abduction.
The second alibi witness who testified was Steyn's former work colleague.
Steyn had testified he helped him when he had car troubles while on holiday on March 7, 2010. A 16-year-old girl was abducted and raped in Rustenburg that day.
The man said he phoned Steyn for advice about his car, but it was in June that year and Steyn never came to help him.
“I phoned him for advice. I fixed it myself.”
The trial was provisionally postponed to September 12 for Lerm to call Steyn's father and brother to testify. - Sapa
