Johannesburg - The woman who survived a shooting by her ex-husband was in a stable condition at Netcare Union hospital in Alberton, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

“She is still in hospital. Yesterday (Friday) her condition was stable,” said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

On Thursday, Paul Nothnagel, 44, shot and killed his two children Chane, 18, and her sister Mischke, 14, before turning the gun on himself in Brackendonws, Alberton.

Nothnagel's ex-wife Linda, 43, was apparently taking the children to school around 6.30am when the shooting happened.

Nothnagel was allegedly hiding behind a tree. He spotted their vehicle and fired several shots into the vehicle with a 9mm pistol.

Nothnagel then jumped into his vehicle and later shot himself.

The two teenagers died on their way to hospital but their mother, Linda, survived.

Police said the shooting was believed to be related to “domestic issues”.

“Because the suspect shot himself, an inquest docket has been opened. The person who killed the children is dead,” said Dlamini.

The Saturday Star reported the couple had concluded their divorce last month and Linda was allegedly about to obtain a court order against Nothnagel because he had threatened her.

It was unclear what exactly prompted the shooting. - Sapa
