Taung - A 47-year-old man accused of raping an 86-year-old woman appeared in the Taung Magistrate's Court on Friday, North West police said.

“The accused is still in custody and will appear again on April 3 for bail application,” said Captain Pelonomi Makau.

She said the man allegedly raped the woman in Maphoitsile near Taung on Saturday.

Makau said the woman's daughter heard her mother screaming in her bedroom and she went to investigate.

“As she entered the bedroom the suspect pushed her, broke the window and fled the scene.”

The daughter screamed for help and residents caught the man. The man was beaten and sustained injuries.

He was admitted to the Taung Hospital under police guard and was discharged on Monday.
