Durban -

A man has died, and another had been arrested in shootout with the police in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Three men opened fire when the police tried to stop their stolen Volkswagen Polo at 10pm on Thursday, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

One of the occupants was shot dead and a second was arrested. The third man escaped.

Police found an unlicensed firearm at the scene. It was thought to have been used in the shooting and had been sent for ballistics tests, said Naicker.

He said several stolen items were found in the vehicle. They included a television set, a DVD player, clothing and a printer.

The items were believed to have been taken in a house robbery an hour earlier in the Umlazi area.

Naicker said the man arrested would appear soon in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder, house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. - Sapa
