Johanesburg - An Ekurhuleni man is expected to appear in court on Wednesday on charges of killing two children, whose bodies were found in a vacant building this week.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the 40-year-old man would face murder charges in the Germiston Magistrate's Court and more charges could be added.

Kweza said the families of the boy and girl, who were cousins both aged eight, reported them missing on Sunday night. The pair were last seen in the area earlier in the day.

Following an overnight search, police found the children's bodies in an unused building in Germiston on Monday, just metres from where they were last seen.

"It is unclear how the children died. However, they had suffered head injuries,'" said Kweza.

The suspect was arrested the same day. It is unclear whether he is related to the children.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Deliwe de Lange thanked police officers for their swift action in arresting the man.

She said that would not have been possible without the community's help.

"This is a very difficult and painful time for the families," said De Lange, and offered her condolences to the families.

"Also, we are grateful for the assistance we got from the community. Without their assistance we would not have been able to make such a quick breakthrough," she said.

De Lange urged all communities to work with police and report any information they had regarding criminal activities.
