Johannesburg - A 22-year-old man accused of cultivating and dealing in dagga was arrested in Uitenhage on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

The man was caught in North Street after police were tipped off, said Warrant Officer Gerda Swart.

Police recovered dagga and equipment with an estimated street value of R10 000. The man would appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court soon.

Eastern Cape provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Celiwe Binta commended members of the public for informing the police of illegal activities.

“Dagga is in most cases used as an introductory drug which then leads to experimenting with other heavier drugs.”

She said it led to uncontrolled drug abuse which resulted in social breakdown, loss of life, and even death.
