Bloemfontein - A 36-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 79-year-old grandmother, Free State police said in a statement on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Livhuhani Hani said the woman was visiting a friend near her home in Qalabotjha in Villiers on Saturday evening at about 6pm.

She allegedly asked the suspect if his grandmother was home, and he told her she was in her bedroom.

“As the complainant went to look for her friend the suspect followed her, she felt uncomfortable and returned. When she tried to return, the suspect threw her on the sofa and raped her,” Hani said.

The victim’s children reported the rape to police and the suspect was arrested.

He appeared in the Frankfort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Butterworth police in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday urged all elderly woman not to live alone after a 76-year-old woman was raped at the weekend.

She had been sleeping at home alone when a man broke into her house at 1am on Saturday morning and raped her.

Police later arrested a 25-year-old suspect.
