Limpopo -

A suspected rhino poacher was shot dead and two others arrested at a game lodge near Modimolle, Limpopo police said on Friday.

Police were called to the Matswani game lodge after three men were seen entering the property, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

They shot at police when they were ordered to stop. Police returned fire and a 39-year-old man was killed. The other two tried to drive away. Police however caught up with their car and arrested them.

A rifle and an axe were confiscated. The firearm was linked to a burglary committed in Rustenburg in 2009.

They would appear in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of rhino poaching and possession of an unlicensed firearm. - Sapa
