Durban - Two alleged poachers were shot dead by field rangers at the Mkuze Game Reserve in Nhlonhlela, Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife said on Wednesday.

The four rangers, who were patrolling the game reserve by foot, noticed a suspicious-looking man carrying a firearm on Tuesday evening, said spokesman Musa Mntambo.

“A man who was carrying a .458 weapon started shooting towards our rangers,” said Mntambo.

The rangers returned fire and shot the two men dead.

The rangers were not injured in the shooting.

“A .458 calibre rifle with a silencer, a cane knife, and two cellphones were recovered from the scene,” said Mntambo.
