Johannesburg -

Two suspected robbers were shot dead by police in Richmond, the office of KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC Willies Mchunu said on Tuesday.

Police were responding to an armed robbery on Monday when the incident occurred, Mchunu's office said in a statement.

“Police officers... were fired at by suspects using AK47 (rifles). However, the police returned fire which resulted in the death of two suspects on the scene.”

The MEC condemned the attack.

“I am gravely concerned at this trend which has, in the past, led to us losing some of our most valued (police) members who have dedicated their lives to defending defenceless communities against marauding criminals,” Mchunu said in the statement.

Police officers were the most valued community servants who needed to be respected and protected to serve communities, he said. - Sapa
