Suspected serial rapist nabbed in KZN

Durban – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested man believed to be linked to a series of rapes and other violent crimes in the Madadeni area.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over a rape case from Madadeni where the victim was kidnapped and raped.

“After information was received about the whereabouts of the suspect, a joint operation by Newcastle FCS, Newcaslte K9 unit and Crime Intelligence was conducted and he was arrested at Madadeni area on Thursday.

“During his arrest, it is alleged that he attempted to attack the police with a knife and the police shot him on the foot. The suspect was taken to hospital under police guard and was linked to more than eight cases ranging from rape, kidnapping and armed robbery.”

According to police, in one of the cases, on 1 September this year, the victim was at her house in Madadeni near Newcastle when she was allegedly taken away by force by the suspect to his house in Madadeni.

“She was repeatedly raped until the next day,”Zwane said. “A case of kidnapping and rape was opened at Madadeni police station and the docket was transferred to Newcastle FCS for further investigation. When the members started their investigation, they realised that the suspect was wanted for other cases that were already reported. Within two days after they received the docket from Madadeni, the suspect was arrested.”

The suspect was set to appear in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
