Johannesburg - Two people appeared in the Malelane Magistrate’s Court after thousands of Mandrax tablets worth R3 million were discovered in a truck they were travelling in, Mpumalanga police said on Tuesday.

Eliazaro Naene, 41, and Arlindo Adolfo, 38, were charged with possession and dealing in drugs, said spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

Mohlala said police discovered the drugs while conducting a routine search of the truck at the port of entry. The two were travelling from Mozambique to Johannesburg on Sunday night.

“At the back seat, they noticed six sealed bags which raised suspicion. They then opened the bags and discovered small bags inside each, which contained 66 000 Mandrax tablets,” said Mohlala.

“The police are pursuing leads to determine the scope of their involvement in other criminal activities not limited to South Africa,” he said.

The case was postponed to Friday for bail application.
