Cape Town – Three criminals have been caught in the act on CCTV cameras, stealing valuables from a patron worth R15 000 at a golf club.

Police are now hoping the public can help them catch the band of suspects who hit The River Club Golf Sportsgrounds, in Observatory, last month.

On Sunday, cops released photographs of the four, two men and two women, who were filmed leaving the club on Sunday, January 22.

Cops say the suspects were meticulous in choosing their victim – a woman who had left her handbag unattended at the table while she played a round of golf.

When she returned, she found her bag open and her iPhone 6, personal documents and credit cards missing.

Woodstock police spokesperson, Sergeant Hilton Malila, says they are now appealing to the public to help them bust the suspects.

“Woodstock police is investigating an incident of theft which took place at The River Club where a group of unknown suspects stole an iPhone to the value of R15 000,” he says.

“It is alleged the complainant, while practising golf, left her handbag containing personal documents, credit cards and an iPhone 6 at the table and when she returned, she noticed her handbag was open and that her phone was missing out of the bag."

“Surveillance footage showed two men and two women entering the club and searching the area for valuable items or handbags which were left unattended. The suspects spotted the handbag of the complainant and tactically removed the cellphone and left.”

He says the suspects were seen on security footage leaving the club in a white Hyundai, and speeding off in the direction of the N2.

The River Club management did not immediately want to respond to queries on Sunday, asking for the police statement to be emailed to them before they could respond.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Vincent Mabalane at Woodstock SAPS on 021 486 2871.
