Johannesburg - A pupil who allegedly punched his teacher should be suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, the Gauteng department of education said on Thursday.

“It constitutes serious misconduct. We have asked the school governing body to make a precautionary suspension of the learner,” said spokesman Charles Phahlane.

The Sowetan reported that Grade 9 and 10 teacher Ngcebo Lubisi was knocked unconscious last week by a pupil whose cellphone she had confiscated during exams.

The pupil, 18, then fled, jumping over the fence at Dan Kutumela Secondary School in Zithobeni, near Bronkhorstpruit in Gauteng.

Lubisi, age 27, was rushed to a doctor and an eye specialist.

During a meeting, she told school authorities that she wanted to be moved to a new school.

Captain Pinky Tsiyane confirmed that police were investigating a case of common assault. - Sapa
