The African National Congress and its allies on Sunday called for the establishment of a special police task team to invesitgate politically motivated killings.

A declaration read out by the ANC's secretary general Sihle Zikalala at the conclusion of a three-day summit of the ANC and its alliance partners urged police to establish the task team to investigate “all killings, including those of other poltical parties”.

The National Freedom Party has seen 21 of its members killed since last year, while the ANC has also seen a number of local politicians killed, including councillor Wandile Mkhize.

Zikalala said it had also been resolved to establish a commission that would investigate any allegations made against cadres of the alliance, which consists of the ANC, the SA Communist Party and the Congress of SA Trade Unions.

While details of the commission were not elaborated on, Zikalala said it had been agreed there was a need to deliver “strong public servants” who could not be corrupted.

“We will fight to eliminate all elements of corruption,” he said.

He said the alliance needed to be strengthened at regional and branch levels. It had been agreed to establish an Alliance Provincial Political Education Programme.

The summit also resolved to ensure that the ANC was re-elected in the 2014 election.

The ANC's KwaZulu-Natal leader Zweli Mkhize said in his closing address that the summit had served to clarify the various roles of the alliance partners as well as eliminate any contentious issues between them. - Sapa
