Kimberley - A 28-year-old mother was arrested for child neglect after she allegedly left her one-month-old baby with an unknown woman at a tavern in Kimberley.

It is believed that the woman left her baby in the care of the woman and walked in the direction of the taxi rank on November 2 at about 5pm.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant Sergio Kock, said that the mother of the baby then disappeared from the scene.

“The unknown woman searched for the mother but was unable to locate her. She was on her way to the police station with the baby when she stopped a patrolling police vehicle and handed over the child to the police.”

Kock said the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) unit was investigating a case of child neglect.

“The baby girl was taken to hospital for medical observation and she was found to be in good health but was taken for an assessment with social workers.”

He added that the father of the baby had sought the help of the police on November 4 at 6pm after the mother could not explain the baby’s whereabouts.

“The FCS unit arrested the mother after confirming that she was the biological mother of the baby. She is currently being detained at the Kimberley police station. The social workers will be assessing the child and will admit her to a place of safety.”

Kock said the 28-year-old mother will be appearing before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon.

He urged anyone with information regarding the abuse of women and children to contact the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or SMS anonymously to 32211.

“All information will be treated with the strictest of confidence,” he added.
