Durban - Twenty-eight spent cartridges were found at the scene of a shooting after an attempted hit on a taxi boss in Durban North on Monday night.

Gunmen had attempted to kill KwaDukuza Taxi Association chairman Sanele Zondi, 36.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said an unknown vehicle pulled up alongside Zondi’s blue Golf at the intersection of Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) and Swapo (Broadway) roads.

The occupants had opened fire on the Golf with an automatic rifle, Zwane said.

A police source confirmed Zondi was in the car.

The Dolphin Coast and KwaDukuza Taxi Associations have been embroiled in a dispute over routes in Ballito.

Neither association could be reached for comment.

Zwane said the victim sustained no injuries and the motive for the shooting was unknown.

One suspect was later arrested.

Marshall Security staffer, Tyrone Powell, said his control room had received several calls from residents who heard the gunfire.

His vehicles patrolled the area and established that a white Toyota Fortuner, allegedly involved in the shooting, was seen travelling along Blackburn and North Coast roads.

“We initially thought it was an attempted hijacking. The vehicle stopped on Kenneth Kaunda Road outside the Red Hill Post Office,” he said.

“When we stopped next to the vehicle, two men jumped out and fled.”

Security guards gave chase and tackled one man found in possession of five live .38 special rounds in his wallet.

The second suspect fled up a driveway and into a property on Chris Hani Road (North Coast).

“A police dog followed his spoor and located clothing along a pathway. He fled the scene,” Powell said.

He said ownership of the Fortuner was checked and was found to be registered to a person in Harding.

“It was established that the number plates and licence disc had been cloned,” he said.

Powell said further enquiries established that the vehicle had been stolen on Saturday from North Beach.

The owner was then alerted.

Greenwood Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
