Cape Town - A Cape Flats taxi boss was gunned down shortly after attending a meeting about violence in the industry on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old man was shot and killed at La Boheme Street near the Wallacedene taxi rank in Kraaifontein on Tuesday before noon.

His workers say Zamkhaya Tanana has been in negotiations for two weeks trying to curb violence in the taxi industry in Kraaifontein and to keep his drivers safe.

They believe he was “taken out” because he wanted peace.

A taxi driver who wanted to remain anonymous tells the Daily Voice: “Zamkhaya operated seven taxis at the Wallacedene rank. He’s been having meeting for two weeks to stop the violence over routes. He’s been fighting for peace.

“The hitman had to have followed him (yesterday) as he left the meeting that was held at a local hall in the area.

“He apparently stopped at a fast-food shop to buy something to eat. The gunman dragged him out of his car and shot him. It was raining. Zamkhaya tried to run away, but collapsed at the nearby taxi rank.

“He was so young, and he loved this industry, he wanted to make it work,” says the sad driver.

Community leader Jan Ruiters says he was busy crossing La Boheme Street when shots rang out.

“Everyone ran for cover. The shots came from the taxi rank and the shooter fled in a car.”

Police was on the scene on Tuesday but did not respond to Daily Voice queries by last night.
