Johannesburg - Five taxi operators from Port St John’s were arrested after a taxi driver was shot at at Ntlaza taxi rank, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

“Police also recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition and confiscated the vehicle the suspects were travelling in, which belonged to one of the taxi associations. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they have not been used in any other criminal incidents,” said spokesperson Captain Dineo Koena.

The taxi driver escaped unharmed during the shooting on Tuesday, Koena said.

The five, aged between 28 and 41 were expected to appear in the Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to face charges of attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
