Kimberley - A taxi driver was arrested for murder after a passenger was fatally stabbed, Northern Cape police said on Monday.

The two had an argument before the passenger boarded the man's Kimberley-bound taxi in Motswedimotsa, Ritchie, on Saturday, Lieutenant Andrea Cloete said.

The driver allegedly tried to attack the passenger as he was driving.

“(When the taxi stopped) the man, who was sitting in the front seat of the taxi tried to lock his passenger side because he could see that the taxi driver wanted to stab him, but the taxi driver opened the sliding door of the taxi and stabbed the man twice in the chest.”

The wounded man made his way out of the taxi and died on the side of the road. There were other passengers on board. The driver allegedly fled the scene, but was later arrested.

He was expected to appear in court soon to face charges of murder, and reckless or negligent driving. - Sapa
