Richmond, Northern Cape - A 29-year-old man was sentenced to two life terms in jail for murder and rape by the Richmond Magistrate's Court in the Northern Cape, the NPA said on Wednesday.
National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesman Phaladi Shuping said James Matroos of Middelburg in the Eastern Cape was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and another life sentence for the murder of a 16-year-old girl.
“It was revealed in court that Matroos, a taxi driver, transported children from Middelburg to Richmond to participate in athletics that were held in Richmond on February 13, 2010.”
Matroos drove to town with the girl and her two friends. After the friends had disembarked, Matroos drove to a secluded place with the girl in the minibus.
Hours later, he dropped her off at Richmond Hospital with serious injuries and drove back to the athletics venue.
“The girl had a cracked skull and serious vaginal injuries. She was later transferred to Kimberley Hospital, where she passed away,” he said.
Matroos stated in court that he had consensual intercourse with the girl which was why his semen was found on girl, and alleged she fell from the minibus taxis while it was moving.
He claimed that the cracked skull could be as a result of her falling from the taxi.
He was arrested on the day of the incident and has been in custody since, as he was denied bail. - Sapa
