A 53-year-old taxi driver had been shot and killed by a passenger in his taxi, police have confirmed.

George Green, who was travelling from Eerste River, died in the driver’s seat of his taxi after being shot from behind.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said the incident occurred when Green’s taxi stopped outside the fire station on Belrail Road in Bellville at about 10am on Sunday.

After shooting Green five times, the suspect fled from the stationary vehicle. Filander said there were three other passengers in the taxi.

The police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting.

Meanwhile, Mitchells Plain police conducted several searches this weekend resulting in the arrest of 39 suspects for the possession of drugs.

Two teenagers were arrested for possession 139 “stoppe” of dagga on Friday. Aged 19 and 18, the two were caught on Karate Street in Mitchells Plain.

A 22-year-old man was also arrested on Saturday night for the possession of two packets of tik, three stoppe and four parcels of dagga.

Overall, 34 packets of heroin, 178 packets of tik, 49 mandrax tablets and 1 169 stoppe of dagga were confiscated by Mitchells Plain police over the weekend.

“In Winterhoek Street, Tafelsig, a 30-year-old man was arrested for dealing in second-hand goods without a licence and the successful confiscation of 125 tyres,” police said.

All suspects were due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court this week, police said .
