Johannesburg – A Limpopo taxi owner was killed when two armed men opened fire on him and his family in Mphephu outside Thohoyandou, police said on Friday.

"It is alleged that the deceased, who was in the company of his wife and their 16-year-old child, was busy parking his car at Nzhelele Spar when two unknown male suspects started shooting at them. They were still inside the car when the bullet struck the deceased, who was in his 50s, killing him instantly. His wife sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The child was not injured," said police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

The incident took place on Thursday.

A case of murder and attempted murder was being investigated.

Ngoepe said motive for the killing was unknown, although taxi violence had not been ruled out.
