Johannesburg - A Joburg man travelling in a taxi on Wednesday night died when unknown suspects opened fire on the vehicle during a drive-by shooting.

Gauteng Provincial police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said three other passengers were also injured during the shooting at around 7pm in Eikenhof, south of Johannesburg.

They have since been taken to hospital for further medical care while the fatally wounded passenger was declared dead at the scene.

Makhubele said the vehicle was travelling from Sandton to Palm Springs in Vereeniging at the time and that the shooting happened in Eikenhof while the taxi was in transit.

The motive of the attack is still unknown and no arrests have made yet.

Gauteng police are now urging people to come forward with any information relating to a deadly taxi shooting.

“No arrests have been made, we urge members of the community to assist with any information that might lead to arrest or identification of the suspects.”

“They can call 08600 10 111 or contact the nearest police station,” he said.
