Johannesburg - An arms cache consisting of an assault rifle, handguns, ammunition and smoke grenades was found hidden outside Mookgophong in Limpopo.
Police said it included four revolvers, an R-1 rifle, one 9mm pistol and five smoke grenades.
A total of 935 rounds of ammunition for different types of guns, including AK-47s, shotguns, 9mm pistols as well as R-1 and R-4 rifles, were found, said Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.
The discovery was made by Telkom technicians who were fixing phone lines on Friday night.
Mulaudzi said police sent a task team of crime intelligence members and bomb disposal experts to the scene.
He said the arms had been removed to a safe place.
No arrests had been made.
“The SAPS is determined to establish the origin of the firearms, grenades and ammunition, and investigations are at a sensitive stage,” Mulaudzi said.
It’s unclear whether the hidden weapons were linked to the right-wing camp that operated in the area two years ago.
In November 2011, police arrested three alleged rightwingers who were plotting to attack churches in Mookgophong and Mokopane.
At the camp, the police confiscated homemade swords, iron-tipped batons and modified crash helmets.
