He and a friend had been walking home from a funeral vigil.

The Joburg metro police officer was to appear in court on Monday for allegedly beating the 17-year-old to death and assaulting his best friend.

He claimed the teen was killed by a mob.

Makhosana and Mweli Sibiya, 16, were heading home in the early hours of Saturday when the off-duty officer pulled up next to them.

“He told us to lie down… He kicked me and used his gun to hit me on my head, twice. At the time I was still responding. But my friend wasn’t. He was beaten three times on his head,” said Mweli.

He said he was saved by patrolling police officers.

On Sunday, Makhosana’s family tried to make sense of the incident.

“Police told us he was beaten by the community. On our way to the scene, they explained that two people were arrested in connection with his death – a metro cop and his friend. That was when we heard he had died,” said the teen’s uncle, Vusi Kasi.

Both the SAPS and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate are investigating.
