A teenager is in a critical condition after being knocked down in Krugersdorp, apparently by the official vehicle of Gauteng MEC Humphrey Mmemezi, Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Thomas Ferreira, 18, was driving to Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, on his motorbike at the weekend when he was hit by a white BMW X5, according to the newspaper report.

He was taken to Krugersdorp hospital with swelling and haemorrhaging of the brain, and fractures of the arm, leg and face.

Eyewitness Lizanne van Wyk told the newspaper that the BMW, with just one occupant, skipped a traffic light.

“We were in the turning lane and there was a taxi on our left. The guy in the BMW overtook the taxi on the yellow line. He jumped the red robot.”

“He had no sirens, but he did have flashing blue lights. Then I just heard a crash.”

Mmemezi's spokesman Victor Moreriane said police had confirmed that Mmemezi was not in the BMW at the time of the accident.

He told Beeld that events leading up to the accident could be confirmed only once the driver had made a statement.

The driver was admitted to hospital for shock and neck and back injuries. - Sapa
