Teen held after policeman’s deathComment on this story
Johannesburg - An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly killing a Cape Town metro police officer in Khayelitsha, Western Cape police said on Sunday.
Senior Superintendent Mpumelelo Hubert Xakekile, 50, was issuing a fine to a taxi driver on Wednesday evening when he was shot dead, Captain Frederick van Wyk said.
Two people - a man and the teenager - were arrested by the Khayelitsha Tactical Response Team on Friday.
After interrogation, the man was released. The 18-year-old would be charged with Xakekile's murder in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Van Wyk said police were still searching for another suspect.
Last week, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille said that Xakekile was shot dead while issuing a fine to a taxi driver when two men fired live rounds at him.
Xakekile had served in the metro police for 10 years.
De Lille said she had requested R50 000 to be made available as a reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators. - Sapa
