Johannesburg - A teenager from Meadowlands, Soweto, was arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting a 78-year-old man, police said.

The 17-year-old was arrested at 9am at Zone 10 in Meadowlands, Constable Sibusiso Chauke said.

The teenager allegedly attacked the man with a spade last Wednesday after the man tried to stop him from stealing his grandmother's belongings.

The elderly man and woman live in separate shacks in the same yard, Chauke said.

“Granny pleaded to the old man not to lay a charge against her grandson. He did not open a case until he felt threatened by the boy.”

“He came today (Monday) to open a case. Police went to trace the suspect and he was arrested.”

He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
