The case against a 13-year-old Soweto boy accused of poisoning his mother was postponed to Wednesday, February 08, 2012 by the Protea Magistrate's Court, Gauteng police said.

He was released into the custody of a relative, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

The court ordered that the boy, who is charged with attempted murder, be examined by a psychologist.

He allegedly stole R700 from his parents last week. While searching for the money on Friday, his parents found he had rat poison.

Later that evening, his mother fell ill after drinking tea. She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. By Monday, she was in a stable condition.

The boy apparently confessed to his father that he had poisoned the tea. He was arrested on Saturday. - Sapa
