Durban - A man convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Greytown Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, police said.

“A 16-year-old girl visited her boyfriend at Ophate area when she was raped by her boyfriend's best friend,” said Captain Thulani Zwane.

Mvunyelwa Ndawonde, 19, found the girl at his friend's home and lured her to the bush where he threatened her with a knife and raped her.

“She managed to find her way back home where she reported the incident, (and) a case of rape was opened at Msinga police station,” said Zwane.

Ndawonde fled to Escourt after raping the girl. He was arrested in June 2013 at Rensburg Drift.

“He was charged for rape and taken to Msinga Magistrate's Court. The State denied him bail and after several court appearances he was convicted.”
