Durban - The 26-year-old tenant of the Pietermaritzburg woman whose body was found tied to her bed at her Rajput Road home last week, has been arrested for her murder.

Vikesh Harripersad made a brief appearance in the city’s magistrate’s court on Wednesday charged with the murder of 57-year-old Saras Govender. He was remanded in custody until September 10, when he is expected to apply for bail.

According to a police source, Harripersad had been living as a tenant in Govender’s home for the past three months. Days before her murder, she had allegedly told him to find other accommodation.

Govender was found on her bed with a pillow over her face on the morning of August 27, after neighbours contacted her family and the police when they did not see her for a few days.

Govender was unmarried and had no children.

It is believed she was suffocated. Her hands were bound and her legs were tied to her bedpost.
