Johannesburg - Have you seen these men and women? If you have, the police would like to hear from you.

In an effort to apprehend South Africa’s most wanted criminals, police have put out a national list of 25 most wanted suspects, who have been connected to serious offences countrywide.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said the majority were repeat offenders. “It is vital that we put as many wanted criminals as possible behind bars. This will significantly reduce crime,” Makgale said.

He said a plan had been put together to pursue wanted criminals on the SAPS database.

National police commissioner General Riah Phiyega has tasked each province to supply a list of its top 30 most wanted criminals, the 15 top syndicates in operation as well as the worst rapists and paedophiles.

Makgale said a new unit within Gauteng’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit had been set up to work across all the provinces to deal with child pornography. So far, the team have had 124 enquiries on child pornography, 64 of which are in court and the balance under investigation.

The most wanted suspects lists would be communicated to South Africans because the police would like communities to assist them to catch these criminals.

Makgale said many of them live alongside us in our communities and are known to neighbours. It is these communities that police are asking to assist them to take these criminals off the streets.

“We want to reduce the number of the most wanted criminals out there. We want people to be able to sleep peacefully at night without worrying about crime. It is the criminals who must be worried, knowing that, at any given moment, police could pounce on them,¨ Makgale said.

They are wanted for murder, rape, robbery and fraud, among other crimes.
