Five men have been linked to orchestrating Anni Dewani’s murder.

They are:

- Shrien Dewani, 31 - Anni’s husband, the alleged mastermind behind her killing. According to court documents, including statements by chauffeur Zola Robert Tongo, Dewani approached Tongo asking him to help organise Anni’s murder in exchange for R15 000. The two exchanged calls and SMSes. Records of these are likely to be used as evidence.

- Zola Robert Tongo, 31 - Tongo is serving 18 years in jail after being sentenced for his part in the murder in November. Tongo entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the State. The State has CCTV footage of Dewani and Tongo together at the Cape Grace Hotel, where the Dewanis stayed.

- Xolile Mngeni, 26 - According to an affidavit by investigating officer Paul Hendrikse, Mngeni’s fingerprints were found in the vehicle Anni Dewani’s body was discovered in. When arrested on November 16, Tongo’s cellphone was found on Mngeni. The affidavit said items stolen from Anni were found in Tongo’s bedroom after his arrest. Mngeni allegedly confessed to selling Anni’s BlackBerry cellphone to a schoolteacher. The cellphone was then recovered.

- Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25 - Hendrikse’s affidavit said Qwabe pointed out to police where the Dewanis were “hijacked”, where Dewani and Tongo were dropped off and where Anni was shot, enabling police to recover the bullet cartridge in a stormwater drain. Qwabe told police what he did with the murder weapon.

The weapon and bullet cartridge were then linked to the murder by ballistic examination.

- Monde Mbolombo - Up until now, Mbolombo’s whereabouts have not been revealed and police have not mentioned whether he was ever arrested.

According to an affidavit by Hendrikse, Mbolombo would be a witness in the case.

The affidavit said Mbolombo had put Tongo in touch with Qwabe, one of the alleged hit men in the case.

Mbolombo used to work at the Protea Hotel Colosseum at Century City.

His employment at the Protea Hotel Colosseum ended on November 30, 17 days after Anni’s murder. - Cape Times
