Cape Town - The murder case involving teenage couple Phoenix Racing Cloud Theron and Kyle Maspero, who are accused of killing Theron’s mother last year, has been moved to the Western Cape High Court.
Theron, 19, and Maspero, 18, appeared briefly in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday with their friend Godfrey Scheepers, who allegedly helped the couple move the body.
Magistrate Crystal McKenna told the accused the case would be moved to the Western Cape High Court.
There were no objections from the three defence attorneys, and a pre-trial conference has been scheduled for May 2.
Maspero and Scheepers had their bail extended while Theron, who did not apply for bail, remains behind bars.
As the magistrate stepped out of the courtroom to let the attorneys discuss the change of venue with their clients, Theron and Maspero embraced one another. Scheepers, meanwhile, kept his distance from the couple. Scheepers implicated the pair in the murder of Clovelly performance artist Rosemary Theron by confessing to police that he had helped them move the body.
The couple allegedly hatched a plot to murder Rosemary after she and her daughter had an argument last year.
When Rosemary returned to the house, Theron hugged her and apologised while Maspero allegedly strangled her with a rope. Police, however, have been unable to confirm the cause of death.
Captain Nomalungisa Damoyi, of the Fish Hoek Police, said each had given an informal confession, which would not count as evidence. Theron was resentful that her mother had forced her to go back to work while she was recovering from an abortion, and for leaving the two to look after her younger nine-year-old sister.
Theron said her mother had left her young daughter unattended, did not send her to school and exposed her to “explicit activities”. Damoyi also said a rumoured R80 000 in Rosemary’s bank account may have been a motive.
