Mthatha, Eastern Cape - A third robber involved in a clash with police at a KFC outlet in Mthatha was shot and wounded on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.
Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said police found the man after they received information from residents of a nearby village.
After police cornered him, he opened fire. The police retaliated and he was shot in the leg. He was taken to a nearby hospital.
One of the robbers was killed during a shootout outside the fast food outlet on Wednesday night. Four men entered the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Owens Road, in the Mthatha CBD, ordered a meal and ate.
“The suspects waited until it was after 10pm and then they all pulled out firearms and demanded money,” said Fatyela.
They took more than R15,000 and tried to steal a van parked outside.
“Unfortunately for them, police were around and they pounced on them. A shooting ensued between the police and the suspect 1/8s 3/8. One of the suspects was killed.”
A policeman was wounded, as was a robber. He was arrested on the spot and was under police guard in hospital. Police were still searching for the last robber. - Sapa
