A man was arrested in Phokeng outside Rustenburg in connection with the attempted murder of a National Union of Mineworkers' (NUM) official, North West police said on Saturday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the man, 44, was arrested on Friday and would appear in the Tlhabane Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He was the third person arrested in connection with the shooting of Laurence Somolekae.

Somolekae was shot and wounded at Impala Mines on May 17.

He was shot in the head following an alleged conflict between the NUM and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

Ngubane said two others Kahayaletho Mzimeli, 25, and Sibongile Sidadla, 40, who were allegedly members of the AMCU, appeared in the Thlabane Magistrate's Court on Friday.

They were released on bail of R5000 each and the case was postponed to July 2.

The pair were arrested on May 21.
