Johannesburg – Johannesburg central police have arrested three suspects for an armed robbery which later emerged had been carried out using a toy gun.

Police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, said three suspects, between the ages of 17 and 33, were arrested at a tavern on Wednesday, shortly after robbing two people in the Joburg CBD.

"It is alleged that three suspects robbed a 42-year-old male and his friend at the corner of Jeppe and Mooi streets on 11 January at 11:30. Victim was driving a white Quantum and was stationary at the red robot. Three males approached him and one of them pointed him with a firearm."

Mbele said the suspects took the cellphones of the two victims before fleeing the scene.

"Police busy with their routine crime prevention duties at corner Jeppe and Polly were stopped by two males who alerted them of their ordeal. Police drove with them around and went into the tavern," Mbele said.

The two men pointed out the suspects while they were busy enjoying themselves inside the tavern.

Mbele said a toy gun and the cellphones of the victims were recovered from the three suspects.

An investigation was underway and the suspects were expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.
