Boitekong - Three people were shot dead on Wednesday and 15 others injured during an illegal strike outside a mine in Boitekong, north of Rustenburg, North West police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said about 250 mine workers who had been striking illegally for the past two weeks gathered outside the K5 Khwezi mine on Wednesday afternoon.

“There was a confrontation between members of the security and the unruly employees. Shots were fired and three people died due to the shooting while 15 were injured.”

He said the situation was calm and police were monitoring the area.
