Cape Town - Three men have been arrested for robbery and possession of stolen goods after they robbed a man in Marina da Gama near Muizenberg, police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 3pm.

“A resident of Muizenberg was robbed while visiting a friend in Uitsig Road, Marina da Gama.”

Van Wyk said the victim had just gotten into his vehicle when a white VW Polo pulled up behind him and a male suspect approached his vehicle and demanded his cellphone.

“The robbers then sped off in the direction of Prince George Drive with two Apple iPhones.”

Muizenberg SAPS received the complaint from the owner of the cellphones, who had tracked the devices and located the VW Polo in Orange Road in nearby Vrygrond, Van Wyk said.

“On seeing the police, the driver in the VW Polo sped off and a high-speed chase ensued down Prince George Drive and into Baden Powell.”

Van Wyk said the chase ended when the driver of the Polo lost control of the vehicle and overturned and rolled onto the beach.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 26-year-old resident of Khayelitsha, was found lying outside the vehicle in the sand.”

The suspect was arrested and taken to Victoria Hospital for medical treatment.

With the assistance of the owner of the phones, the police traced both phones to the Vrygrond area, where two more suspects, aged 21 and 26, were arrested for being in possession of the stolen property.

All three suspects were detained at Muizenberg police station on charges of robbery and possession of stolen goods and were due to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
