Three men have been jailed for life for their part in a 2009 house robbery, kidnapping, and murder, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.
The East London High Court sentenced Luphumlo Mqwebedu, 25, Lubabalo Mdoda, 23, and Mphumzu Mchatha, 24, on Thursday to life imprisonment for murder, Lt-Col Mtati Tana said in a statement.
It also sentenced them to 15 years on each of two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. The sentences would run concurrently.
Another two accused, Lonwabo Makhinza and Ntandazo Jako, both 21, were each convicted on two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Makhinza was sentenced to 10 years in prison on each count, while Jako received 12 years on each. Their sentences would also run concurrently, Tana said.
Jako was the first to be arrested. He claimed the others forced him to be the getaway driver after the robbery in August 2009.
He revealed details of the crime and his accomplices, leading to their arrest.
After confessing to the murder of Mdantsane taxi driver Zingisile Ngxangxeni, 48, they led police to Amalinda dumping site where his body was found.
East London cluster commander Maj-Gen Sandile Hloba praised detective Constable Mbulelo Matyeni for his hard work in cracking the case. - Sapa
